Central Ontario Co-operative Housing Federation (COCHF) is a federation of non-profit housing co-operatives in the cities of Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, Brantford and Guelph. COCHF member organizations include: housing co-ops, student housing co-ops, co-op staff associations, and resource groups (co-op housing developers/managers).

COCHF was founded by housing co-operatives in its region  to provide services to housing co-ops, to represent housing co-ops to the public and to governments, and provide a means for co-ops to network with each other.  COCHF was incorporated in 1992 as a co-operative under the Co-operative Corporations Act (Ontario).

The federation currently has 41 member organizations that represent over 2,900 units of member controlled co-operative housing in the five cities in Central Ontario.  COCHF is governed by a nine-member volunteer Board of Directors.  Seven directors are elected by member housing co-ops, one director is elected by co-op staff groups, and one director is elected by member resource groups.  COCHF employs staff to administer its services from its office in downtown Kitchener.

Services provided by the federation are developed and provided to serve the needs of its membership.  The federation is financed primarily by member dues and use of services.  The federation receives no government funding.

Our Mission

  1. COCHF supports the development and operations of member-controlled co-operative communities; it is a resource and a collective voice for its members.
  2. COCHF achieves its goals and objectives by providing quality services through a democratic non-profit corporate structure guided by the International Co-operative Principles.
  3. COCHF provides services and activities which benefit housing co-operatives individually and collectively within the area served and, when opportune, in partnership with other co-operative organizations.

Our Services

Services are generally provided only for COCHF members – most of which are financed from member dues.  Fees are charged for most workshops in the Education Program and for most Consulting and Chairing services.  Education and Consulting services at non-member fee rates are also available.

Additional services to COCHF member co-ops are provided by the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada.  These can be found on the CHF Canada website.
